Automatic Deck Machine Guide for Pokémon Card GB V1.11 by Benjamin White (vertical_whore@mailandnews.com) completed June 25, 1999. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- [Benjamin] loves Pokémon! Recently, he has been obsessively collecting Pokémon cards! One day, [Benjamin] heard a rumor: "There are 4 Grand Masters who are Legends of Pokémon Card... They are the strongest players of the Pokémon Card Game. Consequently, many collectors seek these Grand Masters." [Benjamin] vows to find the Legends of the Pokémon Card Game at any cost, so He asked the Pokémon Card Game researcher Dr. Ooyama..." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes: This is my attempt to create a guide to the Automatic Deck Machines (O-to Mashin) in Professor Ooyama's house in Pokémon Card GB. My Japanese is still improving, and I have little knowledge of everyday colloquial Japanese, so many of my translations may be a bit off, at the very least. I have done my best to provide a rough translation with what instruction I have had, and the various Japanese dictionaries I own. If you see any mistake I have made in translation please e-mail me! I bought this game as a learning exercise in the first place. My thanks to Jonathan Ng for his extremely helpful Japanese card game spoilers, which helped me immensely while playing, and to Edward T. Hrzic III (Edo) for his Pokémon Card GB guide. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 0.0 The Game: Pokémon Card GB is a GameBoy version of the Pokémon trading card game. It has been released solely in Japan, and is entirely in Japanese. There is quite a bit of text in this game, much more than I had ever anticipated. Just trying to get through the first battle is enough to give a non-Japanese reader heart palpitations. The aforementioned guide will be of great help, you can find it at the PokéGym (http://pokegym.thedojo.com/) along with a good deal more helpful Pokémon TCG info. My guide is simply to one room in this game, the Auto Deck Machine room. This room can be found to the right of Professor Ooyama. It contains ten computers that can be activated, three assistants who presumably give some sort of advice, and one more assistant who will fight you for a booster of energy cards. 1.0 The Auto Deck Machines (O-to Dekki Mashin): ----------------------------------------------- There are ten different machines that can be used in this room. Eight of them contain all of the decks from the eight different clubs; one contains the listing for decks very similar to the three decks Professor Ooyama offers you in the beginning of the game, plus two others; and the last one allows you to store your own personal deck ideas (up to 60 different decks can be stored) and retrieve them later. There are eight different club machines: Battle, Stone, Aqua, Elec, Green, Esper, Science, and Fire. You may not activate a club machine until you have beaten its leader and won a medal from that club. 1.1 Using the Deck Machine: --------------------------- When you turn on one of the machines (by standing in front of it and pressing A no less) you will see a yes or no question. It is asking if you would like to use the deck machine (Technically it is just asking you "Use deck?" but what it does it turn on the machine). When you select yes you will see one of five different decks, each with its own unique name, and theme. See section 3.0 below for a description of each deck (as best I could translate them). Beside each deck you will see one of three symbols: an X with a number beside it, an O, or the same asterisk used to denote a special attack on the Pokémon cards. The X indicates you do not possess certain cards in the deck's make up, and cannot use this deck. Pressing A will show you the cards you lack. The O indicates you do possess all the requisite cards, and in enough abundance to add this deck to your four deck roster immediately, without stripping away from your other decks. The asterisk indicates you do possess the requisite cards to create this deck, however some of these cards are being used in the deck(s) you already possess. If you want to use this deck, you will need to destroy the deck you already own. More on this below. The bottom menu of the deck machines (but not the Deck Recording Machine) says the following: Use Deck Cancel Explanation (Card Listing) Selecting "Use Deck" while the deck has an O beside it will allow you to select any open spot on your roster and place this deck in it, without disturbing the deck(s) you may already have. Selecting "Use Deck" while the deck has an X# beside it will bring up a listing of the cards you do not possess to make this deck. Selecting "Use Deck" while the deck has an asterisk beside it will allow you to replace the deck that has the cards this deck needs with this new deck. Your old deck will be destroyed. "Explanation" (direct translation) brings up a list of every card in the deck. The same result can be had by pressing START. "Cancel," well that's obvious... 1.2 Using the Deck Recording Machine: ------------------------------------- The Deck Recording Machine (in the lower left of the room, it is a slightly different color than the rest of the computers in this room) works slightly differently than the other machines. It is by far the most useful of all the machines in this room. It allows you to store and retrieve up to 60 different deck designs, so you can cannibalize one for some much needed cards and then return to it later. It has the following menu: Record Deck Erase Deck Use Deck Cancel Selecting "Record Deck" allows you to select one of the four possible decks you have already created and store it in one of the 60 positions available. It's simply a matter of pressing the A button! "Erase Deck" will permanently erase one deck design. The game will ask you to confirm your choice. "Use Deck" works exactly the same as on the other Deck Machines in section 1.1. 1.3 A Crude Map to the Auto Deck Machines : ------------------------------------------- Batoru Suto-n Akua Ereki Auto (Battle) (Stone) (Aqua) (Elec) Deck Medal Medal Medal Medal Machine Machine Machine Machine Machine Guri-n Esupa- (Green) (Esper) Medal Medal * Machine Machine Arai Mon Saiensu Fuaia Deck (Science) (Fire) Recording Medal Medal Machine Machine Machine -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2.0 Arai Mon: ------------- Arai Mon will allow you to test you deck in a quick battle. Answer yes to his initial question and you will see a selection of three different decks to choose from: Kaminari & Hono'o no dekki Mizu & Kakutou no dekki Kusa & Chou no dekki Or: Lightning & Fire deck Water & Fighting deck Grass & Psychic deck After selecting the deck you wish to fight against, he will ask you to confirm your choice. Select yes and you will battle. The battle is for four prizes and is quite easy. If you win, you will receive one Pikachu booster with nothing but energy cards in it. This is actually much more useful than it sounds. I was often lacking in the energy cards I needed, and at one point most of my energy cards mysteriously vanished. Arai Mon is standing next to the Green Machine. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 3.0 The Decks: -------------- Note: Decks are listed by machine. Kana first, English (when applicable) second. I realize that many of these translations are poor. I tried to make the names make sense, so translation is a bit squishy in certain areas. If you have any suggestions, or actually know what these are supposed to say please e-mail me! O-to Dekki Mashin (Auto Deck Machine): -------------------- 1. Fushigidane to Tomodachi dekki (Bulbasaur & Friends deck) Note: These are the three decks Dr. Ooyama offers you in the beginning of the game. They are not the same as the ones in the Auto Deck Machine above. There is one more Auto Deck Machine after you beat the Final Four, behind the spinning promotional cards. It contains the four decks used by the Final Four, and Rando. However, I did not copy down the deck names or contents, so I'll have to win the game again to find out. And, because I'm an idiot, I've restarted my game just so I would know whether or not these machines work before you beat the Master of each Club. 3.1 Complete Deck Listings -------------------------- Just for the sake of completeness, here is the listing of all the decks available in the Automatic Deck Machines. I'm going to use English Pokémon names exclusively, mostly because I just like the English names more. Also, rather than suffix each card with the set it is found in, I will simply put the level of the Pokmémon. Lists come exactly as seen as in the game, if two Pokémon are listed at the same level, these are two very different cards. All English names for Japanese version trainers come from Jonathan Ng's spoilers. O-to Dekki Mashin (Auto Deck Machine): -------------------- 1. Added their contents. v1.01 06/23/99 Minor editorial changes. v1.00 06/23/99 Original version. What's next? ------------ - Better deck names (hopefully) - I'd like to match each deck up to the Club Member who uses it, if this is possible (I was playing against what I thought was the Cubone Marowak deck in the Stone Club and ran into a Jynx!). - The 5 decks in the computer behind the promo cards at the end of the game. - Anything else that is needed! Note: I am making a graphical walkthrough of Pokémon Card GB. I have been using DBoy to get images from the game. but I have no desire to replay the game on the emulator after spending so much time playing the real thing. If you have a saved state that allows me to speak with all the Masters, see promotional cards, or see the eight medals, please contact me at the addresses below. This guide written by Benjamin White.
